Description / L. Sevius Rufus 43 BC Roman Republic AR Denarius NGC CH F15 5/5 Star Brutus
L. Servius Rufus.
Denarius, 41 B.C. Bare head of Brutus (?) r. Rv. The Dioscuri standing facing, each holding a spear and wearing a sword strapped at the waist. Craw.515/2, Syd.1082. Very Rare. Light lavender-gray with amber and turquoise.
Traditionally it has been considered that the obverse bust portrays Servius Sulpicius Rufus who raised the siege of Tusculum in 377 B.C. But it has been pointed out that the moneyer is a Servius not a Sulpicius and opined (Cf.CNG Mailbid Sale Sept. 2007) that the head is that of Brutus—the portrait does bear a remarkable resemblance, and that this moneyer—known only from his coins, was here expressing support for the cause of Brutus.
Ex Karl Sifferman Collection (CNG 76/1, September 2007, Lot 1302).
